My Students

Do you remember how overwhelmed and disorganized you were as a high school student? Half the battle in a high school science class is keeping all your work and materials organized so that when it's time to study, you have everything you need right in front of you.

My students are city kids who often lack the practices and behaviors that are necessary for academic success.

At a large, public, city high school they often miss out on the individual attention and education in basic study skills that would allow them to excel in a science class.

My Project

High school biology can be an overwhelming course. One challenge in teaching it is helping the students to stay consistent and to instill valuable study skills. When the students walk in on the first day of school and are given their very own new binder and dividers, they will be inspired to stay organized and treat their work and materials with respect. When it comes time for them to study, they will feel more confident if they can easily see the progress they have made in class rather than having to search around for past assignments and handouts in a less-than pristine backpack or folder.

My class is one comprised of students who struggle academically more than their peers.

Often they have failed or repeated required classes. It is my job to help them find a way to succeed academically by instilling practices and behaviors common to effective students. They cannot do this without materials like binders and dividers.
