Binders for At-Risk Students

Each school has under-prepared students; my goal is to prevent this distraction so that students can learn more effectively. I teach English 9. My school has recently piloted freshmen teams and I teach on the at-risk team. The at-risk, or low achieving, students are identified by low test scores and poor past performance in academic classes; they are targeted to fail or perform poorly in high school.

Many of the at-risk students dislike school for a variety of reasons. Their dislike for school is shown not only in their attitude but also in their lack of preparation. They often purposefully do not bring supplies to class and enjoy the excuse to not do the work. Many have also been treated with disrespect or anger by former teachers because of their refusal to bring supplies. Others, simply do not have the means to get the supplies due to financial hardships. Regardless of the reason why my students are unprepared, being without supplies, particularly those related to organization, takes time away from learning.

I have decided that providing students with binders will allow us to spend more time on learning and less time on arguing over where someone's paper is. Last school year, I gave each student a folder (which I paid for myself) and discovered that this gift affected them in multiple ways. Not only were they more organized, but more of them completed the homework and made a genuine effort at all tasks related to class. Also, a gift like a folder or binder shows the students that I, as their teacher, am invested in their education and value them and their success. I believe that the binders will be a good first step toward creating a meaningful relationship with my students, as well as teaching the importance of organization and education.

The smallest gesture can make a huge impact on a teenager's life. Your help will make learning easier and more enjoyable for at-risk students who often feel unvalued.
