My Students

Do you know what it's like to be frustrated because you feel like you could do better, but don't have the proper tools?

I teach at an inner city Baltimore school and my Advanced Placement students are all in a high-needs group.

Half my AP class this year are "ESOL" students who speak English as a second language. These students are all refugees who have spent several years of their lives in refugee camps before coming to the United States. My native English speaking students don't have many more advantages. My students encounter roaches on a regular basis, and the water in the building is not potable because of the lead in the pipes; these things and others combine to make my students feel that they are not worthy of anyone's investment. All my students would receive a tremendous morale boost by being given some basic school supplies to help them in their quest to pass the AP US History test.

My Project

I want to provide my students with a binder at the beginning of the school year that is pre-loaded with some information that they will need to start their AP course strong. Each unit of study will have a section for notes and readings. Their binders will have a pocket with pencils, a highlighter, and some post-its to help them learn now to take notes. Having an organizational system that is functional AND shows them from Day One that someone cares about them will go far in giving my students the confidence that they need to succeed on the AP US History test and earn college credit.

My project is important because my inner city school does not have the resources available to provide supplies for my students, and my students' families do not have the resources to provide all the supplies they need either.

I want to be able to use these basic supplies to help my students succeed in AP US History. As small a thing as a binder, pencils, highlighter, and post-it tags are, it would be a great encouragement to my students.
