My Project

Have you ever wondered how books are made? Or what makes a book more or less expensive to produce? How do you take care of books over the years? My goal is to answer all of these questions and more through the most predominant voice in epic fantasy today: Brandon Sanderson. One of the most unique aspects of this author is his interest in creating books that capture artistry and preserve the contents on the pages for years.

My goal with this project is to introduce students to the exquisite world of special edition hardcovers while delving into the mesmerizing narratives of Sanderson's masterpieces.

With your contributions, we aim to acquire three of Brandon Sanderson's most treasured special edition hardcovers: "The Sunlit Man," "Yumi and the Nightmare Painter," and a leather-bound version of "Elantris." These unique editions not only showcase the brilliance of Sanderson's storytelling but also exemplify the artistry and craftsmanship that goes into creating different types of material books.

Through this project, students will have the opportunity to explore the intricacies of bookbinding, book preservation, and gain a deeper understanding of the diverse materials used in book production. From the smooth pages of "The Sunlit Man" to the rich leather cover of "Elantris," students will examine the tactile qualities and visual aesthetics that make each edition special.

This project is part of a workshop I hope to create in which I engage students in hands-on activities and discussions about storytelling while exploring the history and significance of different bookbinding materials. They'll learn about the traditional methods used in crafting leather-bound volumes, the art of embossing and gilding, and the importance of preserving books as cultural artifacts.
