My Project

This holiday season I'd love to give students in my Advisory Class the chance to learn a new and fun skill (while taking a break from computer screens) that will bring joy to others in our school community. The items I'm requesting are knitting looms for beanies and scarves along with the accessories needed for knitting - hooks, needles, and yarn. My goal is for students to knit as many beanies as they can during the winter season. I want students to think outside the box and add their own creative ideas, patterns, color schemes, etc. Students can keep their favorite beanies to give as a holiday gift to loved ones, but they will also be required to donate at least one beanie to be given to those at school whose contributions many times go unnoticed - our campus supervisors, office staff, custodians, counselors, etc. Knitting teaches students much more than just how to knit. Knitting teaches students patience, dexterity, problem-solving, determination, and creativity. It has also been said that knitting helps reduce stress and anxiety. In this day and age where students are bombarded with computer screens, social media, video games, and constant brain stimulation, knitting can give their brains a break, and foster feelings of accomplishment and pride while bringing joy to others.
