Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Science is a subject where "seeing" enhances comprehension and retention. To young children, scientific concepts are difficult for them to grasp. This is an area where visual learning can benefit my children and will help build their understand of the world surrounding them.
I'm a 3rd grade teacher at a Gifted and High Ability Magnet school in the Los Angeles Unified School District. Our student population is very diverse, from all socio-economic levels. Our school is ranked number 1 within the Los Angeles Unified Elementary Schools system. Our gifted children absorb information quickly which enable us to introduce more advanced concepts within the year.
The Bill Nye Video Series introduces scientific concepts in Astronomy, Biology, Chemistry, Earth Science, Evolution, Genetics, Medicine, and Physics. It includes topics from Einstein's theory of relativity and Mendel's experiments with pea plants, to the creation of the microscope, and some of the most amazing discoveries and events in scientific history. Can you just imagine the knowledge base of my students with the introduction of all these concepts?
As a teacher, I would like to instill in my students the love of Science. Unfortunately with so much emphasis on Literacy and test scores within the public school system, Science is a subject that can only be touched upon a few days out of the week. These DVDs will enhance my science instructions and become the springboard for more advanced scientific concepts and ideas.
