Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach 5th grade at a Title I school in California. I am fortunate to work with highly engaged, kind and thoughtful individuals.
All of my students are bilingual in Spanish and English.
Most receive free breakfast and lunch at school and have parents who work multiple jobs to help support their families. Although it is financially challenging for them to provide all of the necessary materials for school, they are involved in their children's education and eager to help the school community.
I love my job because I have the pleasure every day of working with a group of kids who want to better their lives through education. I learn so much from them!
My Project
My students are all bilingual in English and Spanish. I have found that while books in English are easy to come by, it is very difficult to fill a classroom library with high-interest Spanish language books. When my students have a lot of choice in their reading, they love to read! Studies show that the more students read in the day, the more successful they are. It is my hope that I can fill my room with a large variety of books in Spanish so that my fabulous bilingual students will enjoy reading every day that they come to school!
