it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are AMAZING 2nd grade bilingual learners ready to take on the world! Most of them are English Language Learners and their families come from countries around the world, living the American Dream. The rest of the students are native English speakers learning Spanish, becoming empowered and compassionate citizens by living and learning in another language, culture, and perspective.
Many of my students struggle with issues of poverty and access to academic experiences.
Fortunately, bilingual education is one of the best ways to close the achievement gap and to break down barriers of racism and socioeconomics! Actually, if a student is allowed to learn in their native language, they acquire English at a better and faster rate than those who do not. And they also have bilingual skills to share with the world and to learn about other cultures and perspectives!
Unfortunately, I do not have sufficient materials in Spanish to help support their learning...this is why I need your help! Any donations will directly affect over 50 students as I teach 2 classrooms of students a day (they rotate with an English teacher). I will also use them for years and years to come!
My Project
These materials will make a difference in my students' learning because they will support their Spanish language development. I want to SURROUND them with the language---from the Spanish room labels, poster to describe their emotions, and Spanish digital and analog clocks on the walls, in quality high interest non fiction books about our Science and Social Studies topics (communities, plants, water and landforms), Spanish Math games with the 120 huge floor mat, to the stickers on their papers! It is difficult to learn another language when most of our minimal curriculum, books, and supplies come in English! I plan on launching the year with a unit on communities and how THEY can actively help our multi-lingual diverse community (starting with the books 'hand to heart, improving our community' and studying about community helpers as well as our own school community). We will read the books together and with 10 copies of each book every language partnership can hold a copy of the book (I pair English speaking students with Spanish speaking students so that they can help each other learn the target language). Later, they can partner read the books to practice their Spanish literacy skills. I will then create units in Science in Spanish and use the National Geographic books to excite them about the world around us and how through Science they can understand and change the world around them. The books in Spanish will help spark their interest and improve their Spanish literacy skills through the amazing photographs and engaging topics. Finally, the sound canceling headphones will help my students who are easily over stimulated focus while reading in Spanish.
