Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
Books are a fun and engaging way to support children’s social and emotional learning and development. Books have the ability to create language for words children are feeling throughout the day. When children are able to put their feelings into words they are able to address them, boosting self-esteem and self-confidence. SEL books support children in understanding and developing their emotions, building healthy relationships, and making responsible decisions.
It is important for children to see themselves and their experiences reflected in books.
Children feel connected and comforted when they see their favorite characters successfully navigating emotions like anger, understand that everyone feels these emotions, and there are ways to manage them. Children feel connected when they are able to read books in their native language, written by authors from similar racial, cultural, ethnic, and linguistic backgrounds, and about common experiences such as immigration. The bilingual SEL books listed on this project support my dual language (English/ Spanish) learners in developing the ability to understand and express their feelings, developing friendships, managing stress, solving problems, and making healthy decisions.
The books ¿De dónde eres?: Where Are You From? (Spanish edition) and Areli Es Una Dreamer (Areli Is a Dreamer Spanish Edition): Una Historia Real por Areli Morales, Beneficiaria de DACA, support children in exploring their identity, understanding and appreciating themselves and their culture, and embracing diversity. The bilingual best behavior board book series promote character development and reinforce positive behavior. The books Breathe like a Bear and Escuchando a Mi Cuerpo, teach mindfulness techniques that can be used as coping strategy to manage big feelings. Traditional cultural games such as loteria can enhance children’s cognitive and emotional skills, while also embracing cultural diversity and inclusion.
