Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My bilingual scientists have so many questions about how the natural world works and what they can do to protect it. Their inquiring minds guide my teaching and their learning through the year.

I team teach fifty first graders in a dual language program who are excited to play the role of scientists in and outside the classroom!

Over 82% of the school population qualifies for the free/reduced-price lunch program. Half of my students are English Language Learners and half are Spanish Language Learners. Many of my students qualify for Title I reading and one percent qualifies for special education instruction.

My Project

These first graders will investigate living and nonliving systems in their environment, discovering which forces are pushes and pulls, observing the sun and the moon cycles, and diving into the world of plants and animals to characterize their basic needs. Did I mention they will be learning all this in Spanish?! In order for these students to play the role of scientists, they require the tools scientists most rely on: their science journals. Students will use these journals to record their discoveries, illustrate what they observe on field trips to the aquarium, the Seattle Science Center, and even in their back yards! They will make charts, graphs, number tables, record important science vocabulary, their scientific observations, hypotheses, conclusions, and even include labeled diagrams.

This is a unique group of students who, through the science and social studies curriculum, are learning a second language and need to be able to read, write, and think in Spanish!

These are the science journals that they will share with their families and be proud of. By donating to this project you will be giving students the tools and inspiration to become bilingual scientists!
