This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Victor Villasenor. What better model could I provide for my Spanish-speaking ESL students?

My students are long-term English learners--7th and 8th graders with heart, humor and passion but many are still reluctant readers.

Most of my students have been speaking English since kindergarten and Spanish since toddlerhood. Our community is in the greater Los Angeles area and high-poverty, with few connections to higher education.

My Project

Victor Villasenor is a powerful bilingual writer who recounts his early education as a bilingual child here in California. I believe that this memoir will inspire my students to value their education as well as the gift of two languages. My students have enjoyed reading the likes of Gary Soto and other bilingual writers since elementary school. I see this set of books as a perfect opportunity to stretch their reading to the next level.

With these books, my students will be able to study the elements of literature in cooperative groups, building relationships and comprehension through discussion.

When I read this book, I was moved to laughter as well as tears. I will guide them in using the books as a model to write their own memoirs that reveal depth and character.
