Bilingual Poets Turn Their Words Into Music!

Help me give my students the opportunity to turn their bilingual poetry into music!

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are amazing 2nd grade bilingual learners ready to take on the world! Most of them are English Language Learners and their families come from countries around the world, living the American Dream. The rest of the students are native English speakers learning Spanish, becoming empowered and compassionate citizens by living and learning in another language, culture, and perspective.

Many of my students struggle with issues of poverty and access to academic experiences and the arts.

Fortunately, bilingual education is one of the best ways to close the opportunity gap and to break down barriers of racism and socioeconomic differences. Actually, if a student is allowed to learn in their native language, they acquire English at a better and faster rate than those who do not. And they also have bilingual skills to share with the world to learn about other cultures and perspectives!

Unfortunately, I do not have sufficient materials in Spanish to help support their learning. This is why I need your help! Any donations will directly affect over 50 students, as I teach 2 classrooms of students a day (they rotate with an English teacher). I will also use them for years and years to come!

My Project

Three 2nd grade classes will work with a professional writer, musicians, and audio engineers to write poetry, and record and perform songs based on their poetry.

Second graders will write poetry working with a professional writer, who will visit the each class several times.

Students will then work musicians on new songs based on their poems. Trio Guadalevin will work with the 2 Spanish-focused classes to create their song in Spanish. A second musician will work with the third multi-ethnic 2nd grade class. Audio engineers will come to the final session with the musicians to record the students singing their songs. Students will perform in a school event, at a community multi-school festival, and have their poems and songs featured on a project webpage on Jack Straw.
