My students need a rug for a comfortable environment and books in order to assist them in the transition from a Spanish speaking home into an English-dominant classroom.

My Students
My students are just getting to know the wonderful school system that is the DPCS and I hope to instill the love of school in them. I love that they are open to this and that they come to school ready to learn and ready to grow with each new item I bring to them.
That is one of the greatest things about kindergarteners; they love to learn and they teach you right back.
Each time I enter my classroom, I not only expect to teach my students but I expect to learn from them as well. They have new perspectives and new ideas that I have never thought of, which help the class learn as a whole.
In my class specifically, we have peer-teaching time, where students group up and help each other in their learning laboratories to explore different topics. Even though there are different end goals we would like the students to get to; they often end up in many different places than we imagined they could.
My Project
Detroit has a growing population of Spanish-speaking children who are transitioning each year into Kindergarten classrooms just like mind. Having books and furniture like those in my project, increase the comfort level of these children and allows them to utilize their time in school to the fullest.
As an English as a Second Language certified teacher, I work hard to integrate what I have learned into my general education classroom because as much as I think it’s important for linguistically diverse students to learn English.
I also think it’s important for English-speaking students to learn other languages as well. Learning other languages helps students cognitively for the rest of their lives and fosters a bond between different communities.
