Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
As a member of a multicultural society, a person must be committed to understanding, respecting, and promoting acceptance of the differences and similarities of individuals and other cultures. Helping my students succeed will be challenging, if the appropriate literature and resources are limited.
The students I serve come from low socio-economic environments in which opportunities to see the wonders of the world are limited.
Most parents have not completed a High School education, therefore, our students come with limited learning opportunities that we as a society take for granted. At my school, 100% of our students receive free or reduced lunch. Their parents often work endless hours to provide the necessary resources for their family. I have visited several student homes and have witnessed first hand their extreme living conditions. Often there is a family of six or more living in a studio or single apartment, where a bed is a premium item and not a necessity. My school is compromised of 80% Latino, 10% Armenian, and 10% other. My students are exceptional individuals that come from humble and hard-working families. They want to succeed and help our world become a better place. They see endless possibilities and I want to continue to support their passion.
My Project
My students need an enhanced listening center with two sets of Spanish Read-Alongs to support their language development. The materials requested will directly go in the hands of my students. They will use them daily to support their learning of the Big Idea / Universal Concept that is being studied. All materials that are presented in my class are connected to a bigger concept that is interdisciplinary, going across all content areas and is relative to my students. In addition to using the necessary technology (CD player and headphones) to listen to and appreciate literature, these fine students will be exposed to multicultural stories that will allow for different perspectives and interpretations of learning and help my students learn that the world is complex and that there are different ways to solve problems.
Through dual-language instruction, students achieve academic success, develop a positive self-image, and attain cross-cultural understanding.
Language, culture, and heritage are preserved and respected. Children are taught to value the differences that make them unique, and to strengthen the commonalities that draw them together. Funding this project will provide my students with more opportunities to enhance their dual language skills and increase their self-esteem.
