Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach at a Dual Language school and work with 35-40 students each year. My students speak both English and Spanish, and they come from homes where either English or Spanish are spoken. They are excited to learn, and school is a safe place for them. All of my students are language learners (either learning English or Spanish), and they share their linguistic and cultural gifts with each other in the classroom.
My students are eager to learn and often surprise me with their creativity and perseverance.
They have faced many obstacles in their daily lives and show their resilience every day. In the classroom, I provide my students with relevant material, differentiated tasks, and culturally-sensitive literature to engage them in their learning. I love to see their excitement when they discover something new!
My Project
The Wisconsin Bilingual Education Association supports bilingual teachers in Wisconsin. Every year, the annual conference brings in professionals in the field of bilingual education to share their expertise. I am eager to learn more about the most effective practices for bilingual learners in my Dual Language classroom.
My bilingual students' needs are unique, and I continuously strive to learn new methods to keep them challenged and engaged.
The strategies I learn at WIABE's 2019 Annual Conference will enhance my instruction. I will learn about incorporating the four language domains in language arts, how to make content-area vocabulary accessible for my EL/bilingual students, and how to bridge my students' learning from one language to another.
My students will be bilingual leaders in the future. By attending the WIABE Annual Conference, I can grow as an educator and learn new ways to provide them with the best possible education.
