I work with a wonderfully diverse group of students who bring a wide range of experiences and backgrounds into the classroom. These differences provide many opportunities for learning from each other, but also present challenges in the form of different learning styles and abilities.
At our Title I school in Colorado, 100 percent of our students receive free breakfast and lunch with many students receiving backpack food on the weekends.
Our school is located in a low socioeconomic area with a high crime rate.
Even with so many hardships, my students are eager to learn and do their best. They want to be in school because they understand the importance of getting a good education for their futures. Providing a safe and rich learning environment for my students is my number one priority.
My Project
My English language learners want to communicate in English so they can be successful here in America. As my students read bilingual books, they can learn new words and see the differences in grammatical patterns between Spanish and English helping them learn the language more quickly.
Bilingual books will help my ESL students feel accepted and comfortable while they take on the daunting challenge of becoming proficient in English.
Celebrate my students' native culture and language through books helps them feel valued and comfortable creating an optimal learning environment. Books like Side by Side/Lado a Lado: The Story of Dolores Huerta and Cesar Chavez celebrate people from the Latin culture helping my students believe that they can do anything they put their minds to.
