My Project
I am the super lucky teacher of 60 of the most hard-working, sweetest, creative multilingual kiddos one could ever have the pleasure of working with. My kids come from families where languages such as Spanish, Hmong, Persian, Mandarin, Ukrainian, Polish, and Romanian are spoken in the home. As their multilingual teacher, my job is to help them grow their English language proficiency in the areas of reading, writing, listening, and speaking. Many of my kiddos are considered newcomers, which means they have little to no exposure to English. They are trying to adjust to a new country, new school, and a new language.
I would love to have engaging picture books in both English AND their native language so that they can continue to build their literacy skills in their native language while learning English.
These books would be available to them during the school day as well as to take home. At school, this would allow my newcomers access to books they are able to read so that they can participate in reading time just like their peers. At home, they would be able to read with siblings and parents, which would be a great way to foster a love of reading as well as engage families. By offering these titles, it is my hope that my newcomers will feel welcome and loved in their new community. This project will grow English language proficiency, engage students, AND engage their families!
