it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
My Transitional Kindergarten (TK) students LOVE books. They may not be able to read yet, but they love to listen to stories during story time and they cherish the time after story time when they can look at books on their own, or ask me to read to them individually. Some students will go back to their current favorite books over and over, while some are eager to read the book I just read to the group, and others enjoy exploring the wide variety of books I share with them in our classroom library.
We know that access to books is one of the most important predictors of success in school.
I want my students to succeed in school and in life. I know that many of my students have no books at home and limited access to books outside of school. That is why I send home a backpack every week with 6 books, 3 in English and 3 in Spanish. I want my students to share the love of reading with their families regardless of the family's home language.
I need more books to re-stock the take-home backpacks. When my students take home these backpacks, the joy of reading is shared with the entire family. Other siblings benefit from listening to the stories or from reading to their younger siblings. Please help me share silly stories like "Don't Let The Pigeon Drive The Bus!" and "The True Story of the 3 Little Pigs" as well as important books about Cesar Chavez, Ellen Ochoa, and others. This project will benefit my students and their families by increasing their access to books and planting the seeds for lifelong readers and joyful readers.
