Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My amazing third graders are thoughtful, inquisitive, caring, and loved. They are passionate about learning about their community and world. They come to school each day ready to face new challenges and take new risks.
My school is located in the heart of the California Bay Area, though many students face unique challenges.
A number of my students are recent immigrants to America and the first in their families to learn English. Some others have special learning needs and IEPs. Some families face challenges such as food and housing insecurity which have been heightened by the current COVID-19 pandemic.
This year, all of my students will return to school for in-person learning. Many of my students will be learning from the classroom for the first time in almost two years.
My classroom is a safe space where my students come together to learn and grow. My students develop empathy for others and learn about their own identities. All students are welcome, and we work to foster a truly inclusive community. We explicitly study and promote social justice, anti-racism, and Black Lives Matter.
My Project
My new students are eager to learn and participate. After two years of learning from home on the computer, we will finally be together in the classroom. Therefore, I'm working to build a classroom library that is welcoming, inclusive, and reflective of my students.
This project will fund 45 Spanish/English bilingual books and high-interest books in Spanish to engage, encourage and support my multilingual students.
Many of my students speak Spanish as a first language or with relatives at home, and access to books in Spanish and English is key to their development as readers and individuals. Other students are recent immigrants to America and are classified as "Newcomers." For these students, access to high-interest books in Spanish validates the many reading skills they have already worked hard to develop. For all students, a diverse library contributes to our classroom culture where all students see themselves reflected and valued.
With this project, we can diversify our classroom library and better meet the needs of ALL students. Thank you for your support!
