Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students come from a low income area where many receive reduced price or free lunch and come from hard working families that have to work 2-3 jobs to support their families. Many of our families walk to school and are English Language Learners and many of the students come from immigrant families.

It is my first year teaching and during this time of distant learning I know it is hard for many of the families to provide basic resources to their children.

I also do not have much of the resources needed to provide them with an enriching at home experience and I would love to provide them with materials that would give them a more equitable school experience. I plan on creating an environment that's full of diversity and fosters a strong curiosity for the world around them. I am in need of extra materials in order to provide this enriching experience. I am excited on beginning my teaching career and serving our community and children. Thank you in advance.

My Project

Our school is a Spanish Immersion school where instruction in first grade is 70% in Spanish and 30% in English. With students learning another language and expanding their literacy skills in their primary language, it is important to have texts that represent their own culture and that also introduces them to new ones.

Many students don't have access to books in their homes and many libraries are closed.

Many families also do not have manipulatives to use for math understanding or basic school supplies to use in their homes. My plan with these books and supplies would be to deliver them to families in need and loan them out.
