Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I work at an inner city school in Los Angeles that has a focus on Science, Math and Technology. Our school is a Title 1 school and over 90% of our students qualify for free lunch. Our population is largely Latino and African American with a large population of English Language Learners.

My students are very dedicated to learning and their community.

Many of the families are immigrants and all the families are working hard so that their children may have a better life and access to higher education. Many of the parents come in for workshops and classes, and they are learning alongside with their children. My class is a joy to teach. They have challenges, like all students, but they have a passion for learning. I want to feed that passion, to keep it alive, so that they don't drop out and they make it to college. That is why I need to do more for them, like literature circles, to keep them engaged and coming to school each day

My Project

In learning about different types of rocks and volcanoes, we also talked about the ancient city of Pompeii. My students have become fascinated with Pompeii and this book will take that interest and passion they have developed and use it as a catalyst for literacy. This book ties social studies, science and reading together in an exciting narrative that takes place during the last days of Pompeii. By having a whole class set of this book we would be able to do whole group readings, small group literature circles and they would be able to take the book home to extend their learning in their homework. This would be particularly helpful for my English speaking students who need support and encouragement in practicing Spanish as their second language. My students are dying to learn more about Pompeii, and they really need high interest literature to spark their love for reading.

Reading these books will take my students literacy and bilingualism to a higher level.

In school obtaining a variety of Spanish materials is a struggle. These books would facilitate my students in obtaining a higher level of academic knowledge and vocabulary, not to mention they will make them excited about learning. I know they will love and cherish these books, and because they are so excited about it, they will most likely remember it for many years to come.
