My Students
It's been proved that kids who engage in physical fitness perform better academically than those who don't! Albert Einstein said, "Life is like riding a bicycle. To keep your balance you must keep moving." So with that in mind, I've set out to get my students riding. Please help us purchase bikes!
My students are 5th graders who love to be active.
They play soccer, ride bikes, play basketball and kickball, dance and sing. They love coming to their school every morning in Coney Island to expand their minds and challenge themselves physically. I am trying to get a biking club started for students, as we just won a grant for brand-new bike racks at our school. Unfortunately, many students do not own bicycles. Therefore, they would absolutely love the chance to get bikes so they could ride up and down the Coney Island Boardwalk with their teachers and staff. It's something that will bring the school community together in ways never been done before.
My Project
With the three Tony Hawk Boys and three Razor Angel Girls bicycles, my students will be able, not only, to enjoy the benefits of physical activity, but of personal responsibility, as well. I will be working in tandem with the group Active Design In Schools and the Citizens Committee for New York City to change the approach students have toward physical fitness at the school. My students will see how biking is an alternative to being driven around everywhere. They will challenge themselves physically in different ways, not just during a gym fitness gram or a basketball game. Biking can become part of their daily routine. They will also learn to maintain, clean and repair their bicycles. It will help them become more careful and responsible. It will also give them a healthier outlook on their environment.
Receiving bicycles that they can ride, clean, maintain, repair and share will make my students feel like they are something special.
Students will take pride in the bicycles. It is more than just having their own desk, books and personal belongings. Bicycles are fun to ride, but take much care and maintenance to keep operating properly. School staff will teach students healthy bike habits. They will also learn the importance of lessening the world's carbon footprints. They will pedal with pride.
