I have the extreme pleasure of teaching an enthusiastic group of third graders on the southwest side of Chicago. All the African-American students in my school receive free or reduced lunch. The neighborhood where my school is located is considered one of the poorest in Chicago, but I must say that my students are rich in knowledge. My students and I have spent the past semester writing letters to friends, family, and business owners to aid in giving books to our classroom library. We had a goal of 300 books and we have exceeded our goal. Fortunately, our quaint library needs to be expanded. My students love the idea of being comfortable when they read so they decided they wanted to convert the entire back section of the classroom into a home away from home. To do this we will need a bigger rug, more beanbag chairs, another bookshelf and more crates for the books we are continually receiving. Students will be able to use the library during small group instruction and during silent reading. With a more expansive library more students will be able to read in comfort at once. We are so excited to know that someone will make our dream library a reality. Thank you so much for helping my students to gain a reading experience that is both bigger and better!
