My Students

Research has shown that if my kids write about their understanding of a topic, they remember the information more accurately and for longer periods of time. I want my students to reflect on their 2nd grade learning and growth by using portfolios and autobiographies as we finish the school year.

I am a fifth year, 2nd grade teacher in a Title I school; that means that my students come from low social-economic households.

Despite these challenges, the students come to school each day eager to learn and take charge of their education. I believe in empowering my students and giving them thrilling and motivating educational experiences that simultaneously improve their reading, writing, and math skills and ask them to take charge of their own learning and success.

My Project

Throughout the school year, we have been filing away pieces of 2nd grade work that will show our hard work and growth in each learning area. At the end of the school year, we need a convenient way to organize and store our 2nd grade work in a portfolio. The wallet pockets are a perfect tool for 2nd grade students to store their work in a way that is easy to handle and access often. The composition pads are like our portfolio's table of contents. They will hold our reflections on the work we have included in our portfolio. It is important that my students have specific reasons about what makes their chosen work great. Composition pads are a great way to keep their reflections organized and neat. Finally, the Bare Books are blank storybooks. They are of the highest quality and are the perfect way to publish our last piece of writing because they look like they belong in a library.

Becoming reflective, critical learners is a major goal of my classroom all year.

Our 2nd grade portfolios are a culminating project for the children to reflect on the work they have done all school year. Reflection has been called "the glue of the brain." Also, we begin the school year writing stories about our lives. The Bare Books let us end the year with an extraordinary autobiography that is part non-fiction and part storytelling. The growth the kids can see has happened is breathtaking.
