Big Kids Need Space to Learn and Work

My students need comfortable places to learn and work around the room. A large rug will become a place for students to gather for focused instruction and learning, and surf seats add comfortable work spaces.

My Students

My students come from a variety of social, cultural, and economic backgrounds. Some are bilingual, speaking one language with their families at home and another at school. Some work at home on their family farms after working all day at school. Some have moved schools so many times that they have lost confidence in their academic capabilities.

The one thing that all of my students have in common is a desire to learn in a classroom that feels like home.

In math, they want to learn the why behind each concept, not just a set of steps to get an answer. In reading, they devour books and love the share their reading experiences with classmates. They are sweet, kind, bright, and deserve the very best that I can offer them each day.

My Project

In my room, I want students to be able to move around and get away from the confines of a desk. A large area rug will give them a comfortable place to sit during read alouds and lessons, as well as a gathering space for independent work time. The surf seats will allow students who need to move and wiggle another seating option, while still giving them a sturdy surface to write and work out problems on.

I don't like sitting on hard chairs in cramped spaces all day, so why should I ask my students to?

These seating options will allow students to learn and grow in comfortable spaces all year.
