We need these giant games and books for our school library. Students are eager to play giant games in the library with each other.

About My Students

Our school serves students grades 7 through 12 and is located one block from city hall. Civic students from many areas of the city are identified when they experience difficulty, allowing the focus to be on intervention rather than remediation.

For the most at-risk students, those with habitual truancy, significant behavior issues, and histories of suspension and expulsion, the goal is to change behavior so that these students will stay in school and earn enough credits to graduate. In 2014, we established the first library and are including popular urban lit, graphic novels, and books about the justice system.

Several classes have enjoyed using the giant Connect Four. Students work together, discuss strategies and relax in the library. Ahmed, Michelle and new student Jerome asked me if we could get some more giant games. They want chess and dominoes to play in the library. When they play these games students will share, develop concentration strategies and thinking ahead skills.

Jerome also asked for the newest Wimpy Kid title and another basketball book to add to the library collection. Each of the students came during lunch time to help write the grant. They researched the games and books so it would easier to write the grant. They even wrote down their ideas ahead ofttimes!!

In Their Own Words

Jerome - I want to learn more strategy and concentration both with the games and in class.

Ahmed - I want to learn the games so I can teach others how to play.

Michelle - I want to try to learn to think ahead. Then I can practice this skill for class work and even for my part time job!

Jerome- Giant games are more appealing to kids. I will help classes try to play with each other with the giant game pieces.

Ahmed - I will make sure everything gets put away in the library so we don't lose parts of the games.

Michelle - Learning the rules of the game will also allow me to teach new students how to play. (We often get new students all year long).

Jerome - Sometimes school (& life) is very stressful. I really like to visit the library to read and play fun games with friends.

Ahmed - These games will give us more choices and encourage students to relax with fun competition.

Michelle - Our library is a quiet place with comfortable bean bags. Now with giant games, we can play together and have less stress at school.
