This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

What do you do when the school library has been closed for over a year and you don't have classic books to read to the children (ex. Where the Wild Things Are) ?

This project is for 2 classes.

My class is a wonderful make up of 24 kindergarteners. The second class is our big buddy class and they are made up of 24 fourth graders. Together the children do activities, read together, go on field trips together and the big kids teach the little kids life skills and teamwork, cooperation and proper game play. My school is in an area that is 98% Hispanic, with Spanish and English as the main languages. The children are not exposed to many negative images on the news and neighborhoods. Gangs are around and bullying is progressing more and more. Our children need to learn about positive role models and good choices. Our school is in a very low income neighborhood. The children are all on Free Lunches and we are a Title 1 school. The parents and I want the best for their children and we will work together to help provide all that is needed to help their educational and social education.

My Project

I have a program going on with a 4th grade classroom where the bigger kids mentor the littler kids. The big kids are avoiding negative situations (Like bullying) while being positive role models to the younger students. The younger students are benefiting from having someone older to teach them, someone to look up too and someone who will be a good role model to them. All these good skills and great lessons and chances for leadership, is a great way to help children make good decisions and not bad ones like teasing or hurting others. One of the most important activities the big and littles do together is read. The little students are just learning how to read and the older students need a lot of extra practice. Our classroom library is very limited and small. Our school library has been closed for over a year, due to the budget cuts. So I am asking for a lot of books on teamwork and feelings (Bear books), books that are humorous and a great resource called "Bullying in Schools".

I am asking for copies of the book "Bullying in Schools" , Most of the books by "Robert Munsch", all the books by "Karma Wilson" about the Bear's feelings and a small printer to print out beginning phonic books, mini-books and grade level materials.

The textbooks we have are too easy for my great readers, so we supplement a lot with materials found online. All these books will really help the big and little buddies read together and work on comprehension, trust and making good choices.
