Big Books can make a BIG impact on student literacy. I teach third grade at a poverty-stricken elementary school in Alabama. Because of obstacles many of these children face early in life, we need to make BIG gains in language arts, and we need to make them FAST!
Because of the financial situation many of our families face in our community, many of these children do not have books at home. Many parents are uneducated and many of them have parents who work two or more jobs and are never home to read with them. Many of my students are lacking the literacy skills we sometimes take for granted. They have not experienced read-alouds before bedtime, discussions around the dinner table, or problem-solving with siblings.
I believe with more resources these students can begin the "catch-up" game. This is my first DonorsChoose project and I believe a good start would be a set of Big Books for read-alouds in class. This would enable the children to see the words as I read aloud. This would help with their phonics and phonemic awareness. The pictures could be seen and could spark good conversations about predictions and characterization, to name a couple. Owning this set of big books would allow us to be able to revisit the books often discussing similarities and differences between other things we read. Mainly, it would allow me to be able to BEST teach them the skills they need out of read-alouds. A small book will do, but a BIG book could make a BIG DIFFERENCE!
Your donation would help these students be able to experience literacy activities in the best possible way. I have the structure in place, now all we need is the materials! :) With YOUR HELP and the BIG BOOKS, we could make a BIG DIFFERENCE!
