Big Books Make a Big Difference

My students need big books and classic children's books for classroom library.

My Students

My students are excited to read. They are from working class immigrant families . Many of my students have low literacy levels due to a late start into literacy immersion and lack of parental support. However, they have shown a keen interest in learning the skills for reading. My students love to touch and imitate reading behavior with few of the big books I do have. My collection of big books are scarce, outdated and dusty, however, big books are expensive.

My Project

My students are new language learners and need rich literacy experiences such as shared reading to model fluency and encourage them to read for pleasure.

My students love it when they are read to aloud.

They like big books and predictable text, especially since they know I will provide the opportunity to engage with the text independently.

I usually borrow big books from other teacher's because I do not have many big books in the classroom. My books are outdated, dusty and stained yellow with age. Even though my students still enjoy the story lines, I feel like they can and should be offered more.
