Help me give my students these big book storytelling kits, the large books and physical objects to pair with the stories would greatly benefit all my students, especially my visually impaired students.
I work at a Title 1 elementary school in Texas. I work with special needs students and teach LIFE skills to severely disabled medically fragile students. All of my students use wheelchairs for mobility, most are non verbal, and many are visually impaired. When I tell people about my students I almost always get the question, "do they even do anything?" Yes! They do all sorts of wonderful things! They work hard, they laugh, they play, and most importantly they learn! They love exploring everything and having new experiences! They might not be working on the same level as their gen ed peers but they are surely working and I want to be able to provide them with as many opportunities as possible. All of our lesson have some kind of tactile element, having physical objects to explore gives my students a better understanding of a concept. I want to give them new experiences, new explorations, and new joy.
Having these big book storytelling kits would be a great addition to my classroom! I work with students who are severely disabled and medically fragile. Many of my students are visually impaired so in my classroom we work with enlarged print and lots of tangible objects. I find that all of my students really benefit from using tangibles because it helps them makes real world connections and gives them a literal object to feel and identify. These storytelling kits come with large books and physical objects that go along with the story. My students love being read to and they love exploring objects. These books would certainly be a hit in my classroom!
