My Students

As Victor Hugo once said, “to learn to read is to light a fire; every syllable that is spelled out is a spark.” Big books will help to ignite this fire for reading in my classroom by making literature accessible and entertaining.

I teach 28 diverse first-graders in a charter school in New York.

My students are eager to learn, but many of them are struggling readers who need extra motivation to read. Access to Big Books that provide a large, colorful, motivating text will stimulate their excitement and their desire to read. Big books will provide high quality literature to help further develop their early literacy skills. Many of my students lack positive experiences with books and other printed materials. Without proper access to quality literature, my scholars will not develop the skills needed to close the achievement gap and become proficient readers and writers. As their teacher, I am constantly searching for ways to make my students feel successful and excited about reading to help them continue to grow as readers. Big books will play a vital role in making quality literature accessible to all my readers.

My Project

My students need 3 Big Book sets for a total of 17 Big Books for shared reading and literacy centers. My project focuses on helping students learn to read through shared readings of big books. In order to read, students need to practice decoding and comprehension strategies. In particular, big books will boost my students’ ability to use context clues, read and create rhymes, and to read with expression. The best way to teach these skills is to model them with big books. Big books are highly motivating because the words and pictures are enlarged to help the whole class see the text and enjoy the illustrations. Additionally, these books usually contain rhythmic language, which helps the scholars read the story independently. In a shared reading lesson, I will be able to make the text accessible to all of the scholars at one time. The extra-large text and pictures help keep all the students engaged in the lessons so they can acquire new reading strategies and learn about new text formats.

Research has shown again and again that the more time students spend interacting with print materials, the higher their reading levels rise.

With this in mind, it is critical to have beautiful Big Books that will motivate the reader to engage in the language and have fun reading. With your help, we can ensure that these first graders get every opportunity to become better readers.
