Big Boards=Great Math Solutions!

My students need to have 12 x18 inch white boards that allow them to show their work. Fractions and long division have multiple steps and take space.

My Students

My students live in a neighborhood afflicted by poverty. Parents work two to three jobs. Parents do all they can but the demands of providing for housing and food often leave families strapped to provide the "extra enrichment" of zoo trips, new release books, educational camps or summer programs, or even after school activities. The students in my class face many harsh realities of a life of poverty. Despite the uncertainty of their home lives, the classroom provides them encouragement, stability, and crucial skills.

Children's natural curiosity will fade if they are not stimulated to develop problem solving strategies through classroom instruction, feedback, and practice.

Research is documenting the hardship poverty creates in education. Over 51 percent of students in our school receive free or reduced-price meals and a third of them are native Spanish speakers. These are my students and they desire to build a better life for themselves.

In class we use hands-on projects and lots of practice to lead students towards mastery! No one needs this kind of life changing, first-hand experience more than under-privileged students.

My Project

Teachers are all about seeing student work and giving them feedback to help the improve. Math especially requires lots of practice and adapting quickly to feedback. The more student work I see the more I understand his/her cognitive mastery of our learning objective. Early understanding is made concrete from repeated practice. A board that only shows one-fourth of our work only shows one-forth of our thinking.

By having large white boards, my students will have room for all the steps in solving problems ranging from long division to adding fractions!

Each time a student makes sense of a math solution it puts him/her on the road to continued success. Working on small boards can create confusion and some student forget previous steps. Big boards lead to Big Success!
