My Students

I teach in a school that has grades from Pre-K through 8th grade. All students who are English language learners would benefit from this project.

Our school has several students who are new to the country and eager to learn English.

Over 75% of our students qualify as low-income, and we have over 20 languages spoken in our school. Many are newcomers to the United States and have little to no background in the English language. Many are refugees and have fled trauma in other parts of the world. Experiencing instruction in a new language while trying to make sense of painful experiences can be truly overwhelming for some of these students.

My Project

Currently, my classroom has an old carpet that has edges held together with tape. The carpet is a dark navy color, with no words or images. My classroom is the bilingual classroom, where I work with students who speak 21 different languages in their homes. Most of these students speak Spanish, and our school has a Spanish world language magnet program. All students leave my school with some command of Spanish.

When students see their language in the classroom, they know it is valued and celebrated.

I want to welcome all my students into a classroom that showcases the power of bilingualism. My students deserve better than an old carpet. They deserve to see their languages and cultures highlighted!
