Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

We are requesting support to purchase the following texts, which we will use for bibliotherapy work with our 12th graders. Our students attend E.H.S., a Title I school in North Philadelphia. The transformative dimension of literacy is part of what makes reading, writing, and other meaning-making practices so powerful; in engaging in bibliotherapy with our students, we hope to tap into this transformative power and support students in processing, managing, and growing from difficult personal challenges they may have experienced.

The exacerbated challenges of the current moment -- between covid-19, economic downturn, and America's reignited racial reckonings -- have only heightened the injustices that shape our students' daily school experiences.

Students at school have been learning virtually since March, frequently balancing this learning with unreliable internet and technology access and the responsibilities of home and work. Being able to access books for bibliotherapy will be critical in supporting students' abilities for personal growth and emotional regulation, which will in turn influence their abilities to learn successfully in other classroom contexts at school and in subsequent challenging life situations they find themselves navigating. Further, accessing these books will support students' digital literacies acquisition, balancing the other multimodal text-driven activities.

My Project

In these trying times, therapy is not always accessible. I am trying to get as many high-interest books that would serve as resources for those who missed a lot of days due to economic and other extenuating circumstances. These books relate to their circumstances and could help them see their possibilities.

Books open portals, and function as mirrors, windows, and ladders that reflect and reframe readers' experiences and worlds.

Help us connect our students to these instruments of power and change! We thank you in advance for your support and know our students will also thank you for your support during these challenging times.
