Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Many of my students do not have an opportunity to experience this. A majority of my students are eligible for free or reduced lunch, English Language Learners, of minority populations and are deemed high risk of not graduating. As such, many will also be first generation college students. Because of this, many of my students do not have access to books at home and rely on our school and classroom libraries to check out high-quality books. Your assistance will grant my students access to grade-level texts that are culturally relevant, authentic and written in Spanish by Spanish speaking authors.
In spite of this, my students show up to school every day with an eagerness to learn, a desire to succeed and the will to persevere.
Each of my students comes to school acknowledging their role as a citizen of the world. At such a young age, they already have a sense of the responsibility that that role holds accompanied with a desire to change the world they so desperately love.
My Project
The goal of my program is to allow students to be bi-literate and bilingual in both Spanish and English. To be successful in this, we must be able to provide students with grade appropriate materials in both languages.
Now, more than ever, there is a need to present students with an authentic and relevant educational experience.
Providing students with texts written in Spanish, they will maintain their academic achievement, loosing very minimal ground while transitioning to a program that is predominantly taught in another language. These books will be housed within the classroom and will serve as building blocks within the bi-literate Language Arts program we are piloting this year.
