My Project

Language access affects more than our ability to communicate with others. It supports the development and comprehension of mental state words, perspective taking, making predictions, false beliefs, inferencing, and hidden emotions. Together, these are referred to as the Theory of Mind. These skills are crucial when interacting with others whose "minds" we are "theorizing" about.

Theory of Mind skills are often delayed in students with hearing loss.

This can negatively impact the higher-level thinking and problem-solving necessary for maintaining relationships with peers, as well as fully comprehending printed text.

Repeated exposure to examples with explanations of how characters use mental state words, take different perspectives, make predictions, determine false beliefs, infer possibilities, and discover hidden emotions through reading can build a bridge to applying those skills in everyday life. Please help us build our classroom library to further develop these crucial social skills in our Deaf and Hard of Hearing students!
