Beyond the Books...Technology Taking Us to the STARS!!
My students need Apple iPad tablets to conduct research, have access to audio books to help them acquire the English language, and read endlessly about other countries and communities.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students and our community are both amazing and inspiring individuals. We are a Title I school with a diverse population of students which include over 80% Hispanic and 100% of our students receive free breakfast daily. Our neighborhood/community school is unique as we have generations of families as part of our school.
My class is a Bilingual Classroom with majority of English Language Learners (ELL) working on acquiring the English language and Special Ed/504 students working hard to develop academically.
My class consists of twenty second graders who are eager to learn and ask questions. I, as their teacher, promote a nurturing, safe learning environment for all.
At 7-8 years old, many of these students have experienced grief and loss as a catastrophic flood destroyed our school two years ago and wiped out the neighborhood. They are determined, passionate learners that are courageous, compassionate and strong survivors who have faced difficult home situations, yet, they are always smiling and eager to learn!
My Project
Our neighborhood is an extremely low socio-economic area in Austin, Texas. Our school computers are outdated and these students crave to learn by exploring technology! They want to learn the language through listening, speaking, reading and writing! iPads offer this and more for these ELL students.
My 2nd grade students do not have access to internet, technology and/or computers at home and their young minds are longing for implementing the use of technology into their learning and researching.
These requested five Apple iPad tablets will take them to places around the world to further enhance their knowledge. They can learn the English language in a variety of ways. They can learn about other countries, conduct research, read books from any genre and level, access current events....the possibilities will be endless for my students.
Right now we have only one desktop in a learning center and I observe these students trying to read, write, and just so eager to use technology to help them in language acquisition. They enjoy educational videos, audio books, and conducting research or reading about current events.
