Beyond the Basics

My students need hands-on materials such as Number Sequencing Puzzles and Language Games to help them learn basic skills such as counting, sorting, and rhyming.

My Students

There are 7 boys and 6 girls in my class that represent several different cultures. Three of the students have already been identified as having a special need which does not keep them from interacting with their peers and learning new skills and information.

The students in my class are very eager to learn and are already talking about graduating from high school.

My students are bilingual which makes it easier for them to talk with classmates who are native English speakers. This also allows them to be able to understand the class rules and routines and follow teacher directions.

My Project

My students work in centers for approximately 2 1/2 hours each day. They are able to choose materials and activities from 12 different centers. In PreK, hands-on materials are necessary for students to learn basic skills. The number puzzles will help students learn to recognize numbers and the sequence of numbers. Students will learn the concepts of more, less, and the same by playing the Count and Compare game. Language skills will increase as a result of the students using the positional word books and resources. Students will practice rhyming and counting skills with the sorting houses.

Project donations will help provide materials that will allow my students to extend their learning beyond the basics of ABCs and 123s.

In addition to using the materials in centers, my assistant and I will be able to use the materials to work with students individually or in small groups to provide extra support in learning specific skills.

Many of the materials are self-checking so students will be able to work independently and make sure they are learning correctly. These materials will allow my students to have fun while they are learning new skills and building on their prior knowledge.
