Beyond Pretty Pink Dresses: Changing the Perception of Girls!

Help me give my students books and STEM kits to change their families' perception of women's role in society.

My Students

Our early childhood school is now in its thirteenth year serving the community. In our pre-k class, that means over one hundred and eighty students have come and gone from this classroom. Along with that, many other students have called our room home for enrichment classes, after school programs, and summer camp.

Families send their precious children to our class every day, for us to help them take those first steps towards accomplishing great feats.

Our families are working-class parents who often work long hours to provide for their children.

There is nothing more rewarding for a teacher than being able to connect with the students and the families they serve on an emotional level. I am very fortunate to be able to teach in the very same community I grew up in.

I see a lot of my younger self in my students and see the similarities between my own parents and their parents. The stories, experiences, culture, food, and beliefs our families share have a lot in common with my own family. While a lot of the similarities we share are beautiful, others need to change.

My Project

The perception of the role of women in the family and in society has to change. I can remember how proud my father would parade my brother and me around to family because we were boys. I saw how differently my family treated my cousins who were girls compared to the boys. I remember telling my father how it didn't matter what my wife and I were having, as long as the baby was healthy, but still recall seeing how proud he was when Liam was born. I see that same behavior and belief in the families I serve.

Girls are often overlooked, underappreciated, and treated very differently.

Families who will try over and over until they have a son. Grandparents who treat the boys like royalty and the girls not so much. Parents who dress up the girls in pretty pink dresses and get upset if they get dirty playing with paint, dirt, sand, and other messy toys and activities that are considered "for boys."

It's time to go Beyond the Pretty Pink Dresses and change the perception of the role of girls and women in society for our families. I am requesting books that will help shed light on incredible women, and especially women of color, in the STEM field. I am also requesting STEM sets that will allow families to work with their children on building, creating, and engineering after becoming inspired by awesome women! If we can change the family's perception, then our girls will be inspired to do anything and everything.
