Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
First graders love to be "experts" and are proud to show what they have learned and to share their big ideas with their classmates and their school community. They come to school excited to play together, to create projects, and to learn from each other.
School is a safe place where our students learn together through guided inquiry, experimentation, reading and collaborative play.
My school is in the heart of San Francisco's Mission District. Our students come from diverse language and cultural backgrounds where the majority speak Spanish at home. Many families are experiencing transitions or challenging socio-economic circumstances.
My Project
Choice time is the most important time of the day for young children! It is the time when they consolidate their STEM and literacy learning from the day. It offers opportunities for collaboration, leadership, and problem solving.
When children collaborate with their classmates to build Magna-Tile towers, count board games spaces, construct HotWheel race courses, give change from a cash register, form letters out of play dough, build words and match rhyming sounds, they are also applying academic learning and building the social-emotional skills they will need to become independent and confident learners.
Choice time also supports student agency and independence; children choose which activity they will pursue and problem solve with their classmates as the work together to complete a project. The practice collaboration and creativity.
