This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
This book club is designed to cultivate a reading identity for some of our highest needs students in grades 5-8. All of these students live in the Harlem and Washington Heights neighborhoods of New York City and they come from a wide range of beautiful ethnic backgrounds. However the reality among this group is almost all of them are reading 2-3 grades below their current grade level. As a result of this, they’ve found a rather difficult time finding high interest books that they can access in our school library.
The items in this list will allow students to create personalized bookmarks, create responsive journals and experiences a wide range of books that we can read and discuss during our after school club called Beyond Books Club.
Students will not only read books and stories that are high interest with characters who look like them or come from similar experiences, but they will also be empowered through weekly writing opportunities to craft their own stories.
