My students need basic supplies and consumable materials that we will use for some cool chemistry demonstrations!
This project expired on July 30, 2018.
Hooray! This project is fully funded
My students come from low-income and working class families and are part of a long tradition of hard work and learning. Most of them have part time jobs after school, and what little they have, has not come easy to them.
Our school is the oldest and most crowded high school in the city.
Many of my students' parents and grandparents attended this very same school. Even with hardships, they have kind generous hearts. Most of them really need support, so I give them all I've got. They are willing to work hard for me in spite of my corny science jokes, because they know that I believe in them!
We don't just talk about chemistry in my class -- we DO IT! But we need materials! These materials will help my students meet their basic school supply needs so they can focus on learning cool science without worry! Most of my students have basic supplies for the first few weeks of school, but after supplies run out, many of them never get replacement items. Second semester is the biggest struggle. They turn to me for help, and I find myself buying school supplies myself so that they will have what they need.
In addition to basic supplies, we have several awesome chemistry class activities that require consumable materials such as balloons, candles, markers, and other items that are not part of our regular inventory.
Some of my favorite activities with these materials include exploding a balloon full of hydrogen gas, growing crystals with ionic compounds, gas law demonstrations, creating models of atomic orbitals, and testing different combinations of rocket fuel mixtures. Chemistry will mean so much more to my students if they get to go beyond book work and put the theory into practice!
