My Students
I have the opportunity to teach some of the most incredible students. As students who already have a love for the arts, they are looking to expand their interests and delve into the incredibly important world of innovation and problem solving. With the need for effective communication becoming more and more important each year, my goal is to prepare students that are able to confidently craft argument and competently comprehend another's ideas.
There is no exaggeration when I say that these students are truly preparing for their future.
With the advent of social media, our students are stepping into a world where they encounter many different viewpoints--both mainstream and obscure. Being able to navigate these various intellectual spaces is something a broad personal library of knowledge will assist them in making informed and socially conscious decisions.
My Project
I plan on using the text within my Contemporary Nonfiction Unit as the core text that students will be reading. On a day to day basis, we will read sections of the text, rhetorically analyze passages, discuss the text, and respond to prompts based on the ideas and experiences found in its pages. As a final project for the unit, student will record group podcasts where they discuss their experiences and thoughts while reading and analyzing the text, wherein they will ultimately publish these podcasts for the podcasting community.
Due to the subject matter of Between the World and Me, I anticipate that students will have powerful questions, strong reactions, and significant personal conflict as they reflect on, and consider, Coates' ideas and experiences.
Through their experiences with the text, it is my goal that students examine and consider the future of our society, and that they might consider ways in which to improve our society and address the many keys issues involving equity and justice.
In summary, these texts will immensely benefit my students in how they see the world and connect to its future through the in-class activities enumerated above, and the culminating podcast where students offer their ideas to the podcasting community at large.
