I am a physical education teacher at a Pennsylvania public K-8 school. The school is located in a low economic neighborhood with 90 % low income and about 90 % of students get free or reduced lunch. This is a title one school.
This school was built in 2007 to ease overcrowding at another neighborhood school. The school was supposed to open up with 800 to 850 students. The school now has over 1,000 students. The school was built without an auditorium so any of our school shows are in the lunch room or the gym. The school opened in September 2007 short of teachers and materials. It opened up with just one class in the gym, now in November 2009 there are two. That means we need more equipment to keep 66 students moving and active.
The resource I am asking for is a SLX wireless microphone system. This system will be used in the gymnasium during gym classes so that the 66 students will be able to hear direction given by the teacher. It will also be used by the music teacher and her students when they perform school shows in the gym.
The benefits of having this system are that the teachers will be heard immediately by the 66 students. This is very important in case of an emergency. For example: fire drills, lock downs and any other situations that may arise that require the teacher to get the attention of the students while they are in the gym.
I know this is not equipment that goes directly to the students. This microphone system is just as important if not more important when we are dealing with school safety. It is the teachers job to make sure that students are in a safe environment. When the fire alarm goes off in the gym students need to hear the teachers direction right away so that they do not panic and we have total chaos. The gym is also used for inclement weather days. The students in 3rd to 6th grades stay in the gym until its time for them to go to class. That's over 500 students in the gym at one time. If we had the wireless microphone system the gym would be a safer place. The gym will be a safer environment with your support of this project. Thank you
