My Students

Generally speaking, people, let alone 2nd grade students do not sit still. Kids need the option of wiggling and embracing their developing sensory system.

I am a first year Second Grade Spectrum teacher at an urban elementary school.

We are a culturally diverse school where students are honored and celebrated as unique individuals with the power to make a difference. Specifically I have a classroom of 27 District-identified students who are teacher-identified as being able to benefit from the rigor and acceleration of the Spectrum curriculum. These students are highly motivated and absolutely love learning and being active participants (and I mean ACTIVE!) in the classroom. We encompass much movement in our daily routine, and still these students crave more. It is my belief that replacing classroom chairs with stability balls will help my students channel their fidgeting and squirming while sitting, and increase their ability to focus on the lesson at hand.

My Project

Originally ball chairs were developed as a way to improve posture and strengthen core muscles, however many occupational therapists recommend balls for classroom use, regarding them particularly helpful in strengthening students ability to focus. Research has found that the ability to move around more while sitting made the students more attentive. Further, the teacher next door uses balls and highly recommends implementing them in the classroom. I am sold, and I hope you are too!

I believe that this project will provide dramatic benefits to the classroom as a whole, as well as for individuals, as the attention is guaranteed to increase amongst the many active minds in the classroom.
