My Students

"Student engagement is the product of motivation and active learning. It is a product rather than a sum because it will not occur if either element is missing.” ― Elizabeth F. Barkley. Having resources to improve my teaching will result in more student learning and improve motivation and engagement.

I am a Special Education Teacher servicing students from Kindergarten through third grade.

I am currently in my second year of teaching. Throughout my two years of teaching, I have learned that working with students with disabilities requires a lot of resources at different levels to help them succeed. As a special education teacher, we also take a lot of data to show student progress. I create all the assessments for each student. Working at a low-income public school, there are a lack of resources, which makes it more difficult to provide students with the appropriate materials to help them progress. I also make my own materials for interventions and to aid student learning at their individual levels. Students are at such different levels, even within grade levels, that having one set curriculum for all does not work. Students also learn in different ways, so having a variety of materials to teach things in multiple ways is also beneficial to help students progress.

My Project

I am requesting the Six-Minute Solution program, which will help me learn different strategies that will target students who are reading at, above, and below grade level. This resource will help me differentiate instruction. I will build students' reading fluency. I am also requesting the QuickReads program. This program will increase my knowledge on how to use complex text to build content area vocabulary, background knowledge, and fluency at each student's reading level. The Basic Reading Inventory by Jerry Johns is a great resource that will enable me to learn and to try a variety of informal reading assessments. They will help me gather information about instructional decision making in reading. I will learn more about student’s reading behaviors and reading abilities (word identification, fluency, and comprehension). The Building Fluency Cards, Readers' Script Box and Quick-Pick Reading Cards include useful strategies that will also increase my professional development.

These resources will improve my teaching by allowing me to learn new interventions that will improve students' fluency and comprehension.

I will have resources that are well crafted with interventions and activities that will help me meet their individual levels. These resources will help me become a better teacher that will lead to student success. Thank you for considering my project.
