Better Science Literacy Through Reading Good Books

My students need a STEM classroom library to increase their science literacy and give them modern scientific topics to discuss so they will be eager to attend class.

My Students

I am a high school chemistry teacher with four college prep chemistry classes containing around one hundred students. My goal is to instill a love for the sciences in my students and teach them crucial critical thinking skills.

The more they learn, the more curious and engaged they become in the sciences.

Nothing brings science to life for the students like hands on experience. Showing them something that appears magical fascinates them and convinces them they need to learn more to fill in this new gap in their understanding of the world. The more they learn, the more curious and engaged they become in the sciences.

My Project

When I brought my personal collection of science fiction into class one day something crazy happened: students asked to borrow them, got excited about reading, and were eager to discuss their favorite stories.

Making science feel relevant.

I believe having a classroom library of books with modern science topics and exciting science fiction will create better engagement and literacy among the students. The topics we study in class will feel more immediate and relevant to their lives.

Radium Girls will show them that safety isn't something to be dismissed. The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy will make them laugh. I Contain Multitudes will show them how science continues to grow and expand in our current world.
