My Students

My students are primarily Inupiaq children from Western Alaska. Their unique heritage and culture plays a huge role in how they learn. Children growing up on the Bering Sea coast love to play outside and have the ability to find fun in everything. They don't need expensive toys or video games. They'll spend the summer swimming in the 40 degree ocean and then ski and sled all winter long. In our small community children are treasured and can still play in the park with their friends and walk to school on their own.

I love teaching in this small community where I get to see the children I once taught grow into adults.

Watching my previous students begin careers, go off to college, or start families of their own has been an added blessing.

My Project

The desks that my students occupy do not have any storage so my students place their items on the floor where they can easily retrieve what they need during our lessons. We need chair pockets to store our books and papers so we can stop tripping over everything as we move about our classroom. Chair pockets will make a huge difference in our safety and organization within our classroom.

Having these individual Chair Pockets would create a sense of organization, pride and freedom for my students.

Children could easily keep their extra reading books near their desks and store their supplies and school work close to their work spaces.
