Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are culturally and linguistically diverse. They are also socioeconomically diverse but predominantly Title I. Our neighborhood is an older, downtown community that is vibrant, active, and very community-oriented. Culture and traditions play a big role in who we are as a school and learning community.
My students participate in school community programs like our Homework Diner, Fall Festival, and Bellas Artes Festival.
Our families are a big part of our school community. We have big parent involvement with our Homework Diners, Fall Festival, Craft Fairs, Family dances, and Character Counts nights.
Our school community has embraced arts integration into our curriculum to enhance the way students learn content. Our teachers attend arts integration workshops to learn new strategies in music, art, and drama that make learning fun, engaging, and truly powerful.
Students and teachers alike are embracing new, bigger, and bolder ways to bring more movement and exploration to their learning day and after school, too. Play is a very important part of their day.
What makes these students special is their zest for discovering and learning something new every day.
My Project
I wish to orchestrate a classroom transformation for Glow and Grow reading and writing time in the classroom. With Blacklights and flashlights I can provide a novel and fun way to engage students with high reading and writing content. This is a project for my kindergarteners and first graders so light sources and batteries will ensure students can interact with Common Core standards and master their grade level standards.
Students will start the day with narrative writing in a glowing classroom and segue to reading books about fireflies and other fantastic themes.
Other high content will include students reviewing vocabulary, story sequence, and discussing key details from text.
