Help me give my students the daily hygiene items they need to take proper care of themselves and remove a factor used in peer rejection. All extras will go towards a hygiene pantry for students' continued use!
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are thoughtful, have big hearts, and are always full of surprises. Some are slow to warm, others welcome you in right away, but they all have good intentions and need support.
Many students don't have the resources at home to help them navigate the ins and outs of growing up, like hygiene routines and handling social situations constructively.
Our school is on the southwest side of Chicago, which has experienced changing demographics and low economic development. This is reflected in our students' resources, as each student is from the neighborhood. Our school has a high mobility rate, so this project allows them to learn these skills while here and carry the lessons with them wherever they go in life.
My Project
Hygiene can be a barrier to forming new relationships. When students come in smelling like they haven't showered or brushed their teeth in several days, other students don't even want to go near them; teachers can find it difficult to work with them one-on-one because of the odor. Poor peer and school relationships have been linked to poor life outcomes, including higher drop out rates, higher rates of incarceration, and lower self-esteem.
A conversation about hygiene is worthless if the student doesn't have the resources to address the issue.
It's not fair to students to end the conversation at "hey, you stink!" if the rest of that sentence is "hey, you stink (and there isn't a lot you can do about it)." This project aims to concurrently address the hygiene and social issues.
Help us address their hygiene so their character can shine through!
